David L. Nalls founded Reconciliation Recovery Unlimited in 2016 after establishing himself as a Recovery Coach with the Urban Minority Alcohol and Drug Addiction Outreach Program (UMADAOP) in 2012. With decades of lived experience and professional service in the field of recovery, David has been a persistent advocate for the development and professionalization of peer recovery support services.
David participated in the job analysis process with The Ohio State University that helped define the roles, duties, and competencies of Recovery Coaches for the State of Ohio. This work contributed to the development of what is now known as the Peer Recovery Support Specialist, a role that later received official state certification through Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services (OMHAS).
Recognized as a leader in the recovery field, David was invited to contribute to the professionalization of peer support services at the OhioMHAS Peer Conference, helping elevate the role of peer support within the behavioral health system. In 2023, he completed his contribution to the Ohio Peer Support Certification Curriculum, authoring Module 1: What is Peer Support, Recovery, and Sharing Your Story, which is now part of the statewide training framework for peer supporters.
In addition to advancing peer services statewide, David has worked with Centene Corporation, the largest Medicaid managed care organization in the United States. Through his advocacy and expertise, he helped expand organizational understanding of peer recovery services and served as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in developing the Peer Employment role and onboarding learning journey for peer services within the organization.
Drawing on decades of recovery maintenance experience combined with formal education and training, David has served as a writer, consultant, and subject matter expert on multiple projects related to recovery, peer support, and recovery management systems.
Through Reconciliation Recovery Unlimited and the #IGotWell platform, David continues to work toward strengthening recovery infrastructure and helping individuals develop sustainable pathways to long-term wellness.
“As an organization that believes in the power of hope, I believe every lapsing episode is an event in recovery.”
— David L. Nalls, Recovery Practitioner
